Investing in Education
While living here in the US though, I kept my charity and other activities in Brazil. I visit Brazil at least once a year (mostly twice a year) and because I see so much resource waste here, I have collected over the years clothes, school supplies, shoes, money for water filters and taken to underprivileged communities in Brazil. But I know this is not enough. So, in 2015, I decided to invest in something I know works: education. During my master’s degree in Foundations of Education at FAU I went to visit Mexico and met Kurt Wooton. Kurt developed ArtLit (artslit.org) while his time at Brown University. I believe Artslit to be one of the greatest tools to improve education and empower students as well as strengthen civic partnerships and communities as a whole. So, I translated some of the material to Portuguese, created other activities based on our culture and did a one-week workshop in a public school in the capital city of Ceara, Fortaleza. Here is the website of the program: https://virginiaengestrom.wixsite.com/literarte.
